IIASA open access policy

As a signatory to the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, IIASA is committed to providing unrestricted and cost-free online access to its scientific publications and data for all users and researchers.

The main goal is to increase the visibility, use, and impact of research output, and thereby generate value for the scientific community and other users of research. To this end, the institute supports its researchers in making their research results and data sets freely available.

The institute requires all IIASA researchers to deposit a complete version of
each peer-reviewed research article that they author into the IIASA institutional repository (PURE) to make it freely accessible within 12 months of its online publication date (green open access). IIASA provides its researchers with the necessary infrastructure for electronic publishing and archiving, as well as support on copyright issues.

IIASA also encourages its researchers to publish their research in journals or books that are made available free of charge to all users (gold open access), where appropriate and suitable peer-reviewed journals are available. The institute helps researchers find funds to cover publication fees through grants or other funding opportunities, and additional financial support is provided through a dedicated IIASA open access publications fund. In addition, IIASA encourages its researchers that publish in books to negotiate open access and provides advice and support in this regard.

To ensure good data management and open access to IIASA research data products, IIASA researchers are also required to transfer research data to the Library for long-term preservation and open access sharing through the IIASA Data Repository (DARE). The Library serves as the curator for all data stored in DARE and is responsible for providing appropriate access and security measures.
