IIASA at the World Sustainable Development Summit 2016
The WSDS is a forum for policymakers, corporates, researchers, and members of civil society to exchange knowledge, and to find and promote solutions for a sustainable future. Originally the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS), it was initiated in 2001 with the sole aim of making sustainable development a globally shared goal. As one of the few forums on global issues taking place in the developing world, the DSDS strived to provide long-term solutions for the benefit of the global community by assembling world leaders in academia, science and policy.
The DSDS transitioned into a greater global movement – the WSDS – and the aim of this years’ event, themed “Beyond 2015: People, Planet & Progress”, is to discuss the climate agreement adopted in Paris last December. IIASA Energy Program Director Keywan Riahi will attend the event as a speaker in several sessions: he will participate as a panelist on EU India Collaboration for Implementation of NDCs on 5 October at 10am, a panelist on a thematic track on Energizing agri-food value chain through clean energy - investing in entrepreneurship and sustainable solutions on 6 October at 10am and take part in a plenary session on the Climate-Water-Energy-Food Nexus as a panel speaker on 6 October at 4.45pm.
Research collaborations between IIASA and India stretch back to the 1970s, but the relationship has recently become far more productive after India became a national member of IIASA in 2007 through TIFAC. Through multiple research collaborations, IIASA’s applied systems analysis has brought a global perspective, interdisciplinary research expertise, and policy relevance to issues ranging from the future of India’s energy system to increasing the country’s food production. Greater collaboration with IIASA has also brought Indian researchers into contact with the Institute's global network of around 1,800 active researchers and 300 research partners. These often informal connections, along with the official projects of the India-IIASA program have resulted in over 130 joint publications since 2008. IIASA's academic training programs have also been successfully building the next generation of systems analysts in India.
