Technology Diffusion under Uncertainty

The impact of uncertainty on the adoption of new technologies was studied in the framework of the EUFP7 project, PROSUITE, and the collaboration project with Norway, PURELEC.

The PROSUITE Project studied the PROspective SUstaInability Assessment of TEchnologies. This European project delivered a novel methodology, framework and software tool for conducting sustainability assessment of products and technologies within a life cycle approach.

Thus, taking into account market, environmental, price, and policy uncertainties, an analysis took place of investment in carbon capture and storage (CCS; see image above), of modules   fitted to traditional fossil-fuel-fired or new biomass power plants, independent green power energy islands, and wind farms of various magnitudes.

The results will enable policymakers to use the available instruments, like feed-in tariffs or subsidies, more efficiently and design better policies to foster investment in new technologies.
