07 December 2018 - 08 December 2018
The 9th Annual Asia‐Pacific Research Universities (APRU) Conference on Population Aging to be held Dec. 7‐8, 2018 at the Hong Kong University of Science and
Technology. This years theme is “Dementia, Cognition, and Healthy and Productive Aging”. The conference emphasises the following topics: dementia and cognitive function of the elderly, including measurement, determinants, and consequences for work and elderly care; health care and long‐term care; extending working lives, pensions, and retirement; and elderly well‐being, including economic, social, and physical and mental health.
The Conference will bring together leading researchers in multiple fields from APRU’s 50 member universities as well as other leading international experts on population ageing. As leading expert on aging and mental health and with extensive research on these issues Sergei Scherbov is invited speaker at this conference. He will give a presentation entitled "Reconceptualising Aging in Greater China" on 7 December at 3.45pm, during plenary session 4 on healthy and productive aging.
For many years Scherbov together with Warren Sanderson have developed new measures of age and aging in demographic research. They suggest to broaden research methods to account for significant increases in life expectancy, as the focus on chronological age of people alone provides a limited picture of the process, one that is often not appropriate for either scientific study or policy analysis. Their groundbreaking results have been published in Nature and Science and other high level journals. Scherbov is also PI of the Reassessing Ageing from a Population Perspective (Re-Ageing) project at IIASA that, among other things, ascertains the extent to which advanced societies are actually aging in multiple dimensions, including health, cognitive abilities, and longevity.
