Biography
Juraj Balkovic first joined IIASA in March 2012 and is currently a research scholar in the Agriculture, Forestry, and Ecosystem Services Research Group of the IIASA Biodiversity and Natural Resources Program, where he also leads the Agro-Environmental Systems team. He has over 15-years’ experience with soil and plant science, and research at the national and international levels. His research includes land use, landscape, and biophysical crop modeling at regional and global scales, focusing on the productivity of global agricultural systems under climate change and management interventions, soil health, and ecosystem carbon and nutrient cycles. He has been the principal investigator of the European Commission-funded project IMPACT2C, aiming at understanding a climate change of 2°C and the corresponding impacts, risks, and adaptation in Europe. He is also the principal investigator of a European Commission-funded project called AlfaWetlands, which focuses on the restoration potential of European wetlands.Balkovic received his master’s degree in 1999 and his doctorate in 2003, both from the Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. The latter in soil science. Before joining IIASA, he worked as an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University and as a research scholar at the Soil Science and Conservation Research Institute in Slovakia.
