Biography

Gemma Gerber first joined IIASA as a participant in the 2022 Young Scientists Summer Program, and is currently a research scholar in the Biodiversity, Ecology, and Conservation Research Group of the Biodiversity and Natural Resources Program. She is strongly involved with the Assessing Climate Change Risk in the European Union (ACCREU) project.

As part of this project, Gerber’s current research at IIASA addresses the impacts of projected climate change and land use on biodiversity and ecosystem services in the EU and potential management-related cost estimates.

She holds a PhD, a master’s, and a bachelor’s with honors degree in Biological Sciences from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Gerber has extensive experience with quantitative ecosystem network modeling and ecological network analysis, with a particular focus on characterizing model uncertainties introduced by real-world data variability. She is very interested in R-programming and is the author and maintainer of an active R-package.
