Research programs

Research at IIASA is based on advanced systems analysis which uses an integrated, interdisciplinary approach based on mathematical models and analytical techniques to investigate complex systems. Currently nine research programs carry out research at IIASA into the dynamics of global change.


Advanced Systems Analysis

The mission of the Advanced Systems Analysis (ASA) Program is to bridge systems-analytical methods and applications in the areas of global change science. More

Energy

The goal of the Energy Program (ENE) is to better understand the dynamics of future energy transitions, their main driving forces, enabling factors, and barriers, as well as the consequences of those transitions for the social, economic, and environmental dimensions of human wellbeing. More

Evolution and Ecology

The Evolution and Ecology Program (EEP) analyzes and forecasts how ecological and evolutionary dynamics shape populations, communities, and ecosystems, and how behavioral dynamics and adaptations determine the fate of groups of interacting agents. More

Mitigation of Air Pollution and Greenhouse Gases

The Mitigation of Air Pollution and Greenhouse Gases (MAG) Program explores new ways of delivering cost-effective improvements to development, human health, agricultural production, and biodiversity at local scale and in the near term that yield positive side-effects for climate change. More

Risk, Policy and Vulnerability

The Risk, Policy and Vulnerability (RPV) Program contributes to transforming the way societies manage the risks to interconnected economic, ecological, and social systems, such as natural disasters, climate change, and technological and ecological transitions. RPV develops strong analytical foundations for approaches to improve the management of such risks and thereby promote resilience. More

Transitions to New Technologies

The strategic goals of the Transitions to New Technologies (TNT) Program are: i) to further the understanding of the patterns, drivers, constraints, impacts, and dynamics of technological change, particularly in areas like climate change that are key for framing global sustainability conditions; and ii) to disseminate policy-relevant research findings through high-level global forums and major international scientific assessments. Water

The overall aim of the Water (WAT) Program is to improve human wellbeing through water security; to that end, it develops scientific evidence and systems analysis-based tools to help identify water-related policies and management practices that work together coherently across scales and sectors. More

World Population

The World Population Program (POP) addresses the human-development dimension of global change. It carries out comprehensive research into the changing size and composition of human populations around the world and analyzes their impacts and their effects on human vulnerability. More
