Launch of Unit for Sustainable Water and Environment

David Wiberg (IIASA Water Program) as keynote speaker at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State to launch the new Unit for Sustainable Water and Environment on Bloemfontein Campus, a main partner in establishing the Southern African Young Scientists Summer Program (SA-YSSP), a pilot regional spin-off of IIASA’s flagship YSSP.

On 14 October 2015 the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State launches the new Unit for Sustainable Water and Environment. The unit is located in the department of civil engineering, headed by Dr. Yali Woyessa, on Bloemfontein Campus.

Together with South African National Research Foundationthe South African Department of Science and Technology, the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State, South Africa, was one of IIASA´s main partners in establishing the Southern African Young Scientists Summer Program.

Dr. Yali Woyessa, the founder of the new unit for Sustainable Water and Environment at CUT has also been one of the main supervisors during the last SA-YSSP. Together with David Wiberg, Acting Director of IIASA´s Water program the following themes were supervised during the last IIASA-SA-YSSP.

  1. Water Futures and Solutions: Climate Change and Water Security in Africa.
  2. Developing sustained solutions to improve urban water security.

Furthermore, recently a joint publication came out of the supervision of Onalenna Gwate
during the last IIASA-SA-YSSP onDynamics of land cover and impact on stream flow in the Modder River Basin of South Africa: Case study of a quaternary catchment.

With the SA-YSSP being located at Bloemfontein Campus and joint efforst, IIASA has significantly influenced the development of the new Unit for Sustainable Water and Environment. To gigve credit to this successful outcome and collaboration between IIASA and CUT, David Wiberg, got the honor to being invited to the launch of the new unit at CUT as a keynote speaker.

CUT’s water resource expert, Professor Woyessa, offers valuable insight in how best to optimise South Africa’s water supply and use in a more sustainable way. South Africa receives half the average global rainfall annually and with global warming a major concern to the future of the country’s water supply, industry leaders and academics are constantly being challenged  to further their research and  to develop adequate water conservation techniques.
