IIASA’s Mitigation of Air Pollution & Greenhouse Gases Program (MAG) is using its modeling tools to identify strategies to assist in meeting European Union’s clean air goals.

For several years, IIASA’s GAINS model has been the key analytical tool used to examine the quantitative emission ceilings that meet the environmental objectives of the European Union’s National Emission Ceilings program. Through a series of reports and studies since 2007, EU working groups have strived to turn environmental objectives of the Thematic Strategy on Air Pollution legislation into quantitative targets. That work is based on models and data developed by the MAG program.

The European Commission, supported by its Clean Air For Europe (CAFÉ) program, has developed a long-term, strategic and integrated policy to protect against the effects of air pollution on human health and the environment. IIASA researchers, using the RAINS model, continue to play a central role in developing scenarios and data that enable the Commission move forward with the CAFÉ program.
