The annual Global Solutions Summit held by the Global Solutions Initiative brings together international research organizations, thought leaders and decision makers from politics, business and civil communities. The summit aims to provide policy recommendations on major G20 issues, thereby serving as a stepping stone to the Japanese T20 Summit in May 2019 and the Japanese G20 Summit in June 2019.

As one of the world's leading population experts, Wolfgang Lutz was invited to give a keynote at this event. Since 1984 at IIASA, Lutz has worked on family demography, fertility analysis, population projection, and the interaction between population and environment. Together with his colleagues at POP, he has been expanding demographic methods to make them more relevant for the analysis of contemporary global policy challenges. He is an advocate in promoting the crucial role of education for dealing with future challenges.

Recently IIASA published a book entitled "Demographic and human capital scenarios for the 21st century" that was produced together with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) under the leadership of Lutz. It examines potential future scenarios on population trends across the world, taking into account migration, fertility, mortality, education, and labor force participation. The work was conducted in the framework of the Centre of Expertise on Population and Migration (CEPAM) a collaboration between IIASA’s World Population Program and the JRC.

The Global Solutions Summit 2019 will focus on the priorities of the Japanese G20 Presidency, including policy recommendations on sustainable development, infrastructure finance, financial architecture, trade and investment, climate change, future of work and education, social cohesion and the future of politics, SME policy, policies for aging populations, and more. All discussions will be linked to the overarching narrative of recoupling economic, environmental and social progress. We will furthermore highlight all relevant issues for the future of multilateralism and strengthen the implementation site in our discussions.
