He received his master's and doctor of science degrees from Kyoto University, Japan, based on his work on primate ecology and behavior. He then worked in diverse research fields, such as modeling of animal behavior using evolutionary game theory and inference of past population dynamics from genetic data.
Dr. Matsumura is currently working on spatial modeling of interactions between anglers and fish populations. This is a part of a cooperative research project (ADAPTFISH) between IIASA and IGB (Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries, Berlin).
