Rastislav Skalsky joined IIASA's Ecosystems Services and Management Program (ESM) in June 2012, as a Research Scholar with the Agro-Environmental Systems (AES) Group. His research focuses on process-based agro-ecosystem models, up-scaling with spatial data on soil, topography and land use for large-scale simulations at regional, continental and global scales. His research also includes crop model validation and calibration for a variety of practical research problems of crop production and environmental impacts of agricultural systems. Most recently he has also started to focus on the integration of soil and agro-ecosystem information with citizen observatory projects in the domain of land use and land management.
He received his master’s degree in 1999, in environmental sciences and his doctorate in 2008, in soil science, both from the Comenius University in Bratislava (Slovakia). In 1999, he started his career as a Research Associate at the Soil Science and Conservation Research Institute (Slovakia) where his professional focus is mostly on the national scale, in particular on soil organic carbon and drought modeling in the agricultural sector and semantic aspects of soil data/information collecting, harmonization, communication and use for decision and policy making knowledge support.
