IIASA Alumnus Exploratory and Special Projects
Mauricio Antonio Lopes joined IIASA in December 2018 as a Visiting Scholar associated with the- Ecosystems Services and Management Program (ESM) and Exploratory and Special Projects (ESP).
A plant geneticist by training, he received his BSc degree in Agronomy (1983) from the Federal University of Viçosa, Brazil, MSc degree in Plant Genetics (1989), from Purdue University, USA, and PhD in Molecular Genetics (1993) from the University of Arizona, USA. He has been a member of the scientific team of Embrapa - the Brazilian Agricultural Research Organization, since 1986. He was maize breeder (1986-1995) and Head of Research and Development (1995-1999) of Embrapa’s Maize and Sorghum Center. From January 2000 to April 2003 he was the Head of the Research and Development Department of Embrapa, in Brasilia. From April 2004 to April 2007 he was the Head of Research and Development of Embrapa’s Genetic Resources and Biotechnology Center and from April 2007 to October 2008 he worked at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations – FAO, in Rome. From October 2009 to April 2011 he led Embrapa's international cooperation program in Asia, in association with the Rural Development Administration - RDA, in South Korea. He was Executive Director of Research and Development (2011- 2012) and President of Embrapa for two successive terms, until October 2018.
Dr. Lopes' expertise lies in leading organizational management in diverse fronts, from operational strategies to planning and strategic intelligence, to help definition and implementation of research, development and innovation agendas. He has accumulated extensive experience as scientist and executive, having engaged in extensive interaction and collaboration with academia, industry, government ministries, agencies, development banks, multilateral development organizations, among many others. His major scientific contributions include the development and release of improved maize varieties and germplasm, capacity building activities, foresight and strategic analysis, policy recommendations, and many research papers and book chapters. He is also actively engaged in science communication, contributing regularly with opinion articles to major newspapers and magazines. In 2014 he was awarded the Distinguished Agriculture Alumni Award from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN – USA and the Ordre du Mérite Agricole conferred by the French Republic for outstanding contribution to world agriculture. In 2015 he was elected member of the Brazilian Academy of Agriculture. In 2017 he was awarded the Medal of the Rio Branco Order, by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil. In 2018 he received the title of “Doctor of Agriculture Honoris Causa” by Purdue University, USA and the Medal of Merit of the Federation of Agriculture of Minas Gerais State – in Brazil.
