Shalini Randeria

Randeria has been a Member of the Senate of the German Research Council (DFG); President of the European Association of Social Anthropologists (EASA); a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies, Berlin; Max Weber Professor at LMU, Munich, and Peter Ustinov Professor at the University of Vienna. She has served on the Advisory Board of the Wenner-Gren Foundation, New York and on the Editorial Board of Annual Review of Anthropology. Currently, she is a member of the Editorial Board of the American Ethnologist, serves on the Board of Trustees of the CEU, the Academic Advisory Board of the Wien Museum as well as the Advisory Board of the Higher Education Support Program of the Open Society Foundations.

She has published widely on the anthropology of globalization, law, the state and social movements. Her empirical research on India addresses issues of post-coloniality and multiple modernities. Her publications include the edited volumes: Border Crossings: Grenzverschiebungen und Grenzüberschreitungen in einer globalisierten Welt (in press); Politics of the Urban Poor, Special Issue of Current Anthropology (2015); Anthropology: Now and Next (2014); Jenseits des Eurozentrismus: Postkoloniale Perspektiven in den Geschichts- und Kulturwissenschaften (2014); Critical Mobilities (2013); Vom Imperialismus zum Empire: Nicht-westliche Perspektiven auf Globalisierung (2009).

Randeria has participated in the Alpbach-Laxenburg Group, a reflection group founded by IIASA and the European Forum Alpbach, and gave a keynote address on “Precarious livelihoods, disposable lives, and struggles for citizenship rights” as part of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and IIASA public lecture series.
