Professor Kandel was the former Head of the Israeli National Economic Council (NEC), and the Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Israel. The NEC played a central role in all significant economic policy decisions on a broad range of issues in three consecutive Israeli governments. He is currently Chairman of the Advisory Committee to the Israeli Prime Minister and National Economic Council (NEC). He has also chaired or participated in numerous high-level governmental economic and policy committees and has acted as an academic and policy consultant to business and investors. He is also CEO of a non-profit organization focused on strengthening and promoting Israeli innovation.
In addition to bringing a wealth of relevant academic and science-to-policy expertise to complement IIASA’s research and policy portfolio, Professor Kandel’s standing and influence within the Israeli government and research communities, and his acting as an ambassador for IIASA, will significantly benefit IIASA in increasing its profile and influence across Israel. This will help enable IIASA to have immediate in-country impact upon Israel becoming a IIASA member country.
Professor Kandel has been instrumental in helping with the negotiations with regards to Israel membership. In addition, Professor Kandel is a member of the Alpbach-Laxenburg Group and has recently visited IIASA in September 2016 and gave a public Institute’s lecture on the "Role of Innovation in Economic Development: case of Israel."
