Budapest Water Summit


The Summit brings together political, scientific, and technical experts to formulate a recommendation for the UN General Assembly on one overarching Sustainable Development Goal on water and sanitation. 

IIASA and its partners in the Water Futures and Solutions: World Water Scenarios initiative will be participating in the Budapest Water Summit from 8 to 11 October in Budapest. The Summit aims to take stock of the various developments, in and outside the UN system, in preparing water-related goals for the post-2015 development agenda. With 1200 participants expected from government, business, science, non-governmental organizations and civil society, the Summit will cover the following main areas:

  • Striving for universal access to water and sanitation
  • Integrated water resources management for the 21st century
  • Good water governance
  • Green economy for blue water
  • Investment in and financing of the implementation of water and sanitation SDG

IIASA Director and Chief Executive Officer Pavel Kabat gave a speech at the opening ceremony of the Budapest Water Summit. Kabat made three pitches: for integrative science, a vision of the future and for new types of partnerships. These are the key elements of the Water Futures and Solution initiative and are essential to tackle global water challenges.

Keynote speech

9 October (14:00): IIASA Director and CEO Prof. Pavel Kabat on “Water at a Crossroads: What May the Future Bring?” in the second plenary session on “Integrated water resources management for the 21st century.”

Side event

9 October (15.25 to 15.55): The side event “A New Generation of Water Scenarios for the 2015 World Water Forum” will outline the development of a new generation of global, science-based and stakeholder-informed water scenarios to identify robust and resilient options for meeting today’s global water challenges. It will take place in the Science Forum room at the Summit and the speakers include:

Exhibition

9-11 October: As part of the Water and Sanitation Expo at the Summit, IIASA in partnership with the publisher, Springer, will have a stand to inform the Summit’s participants about the Water Futures and Solutions initiative.
