Alexei Gvishiani is an Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS); Professor and Director of the Geophysical Center at the RAS; member of the Academia Europaea; Chairman of the Russian National Geophysical Committee at the RAS; and Deputy Academician-Secretary of the Earth Science Branch of the RAS. He has been the IIASA Council Member for Russia since 2009 and Vice-Chair of IIASA Council since 2014.
Gvishiani graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU), he gained his math PhD from MSU (1974) and Doctor of Sciences degree in geophysics from the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth (1984). He has worked with geoscience institutions and universities in Austria, France, India, Italy, Russia, Spain and the USA, including: Instituts de Physique du Globe de Paris and Strasbourg, Madrid Institute of Geography, Université de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
Gvishiani was scientific leader of the European Union Information Society Technologies (IST) program development in the former Soviet Union countries (1996–2003). He is the RAS delegate to the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) and the Committee on Data of the ICSU (CODATA) and is the International Council for Science (ICSU) delegate to CODATA. He was CODATA - RAS - European Geoscience Union research group leader for the unique digital magnetic Atlas from 2000 till 2010.
Gvishiani’s research interests primarily concern seismic zonation and measuring, mapping and understanding the multitude of magnetic fields in and near Earth. The focus of his work centers on participating in global efforts to measure the Earth's magnetic field and leading such efforts in Russia. He has made important contributions to the international development of geoinformatics, earth sciences data mining and systems analysis.
Gvishiani has published more than 300 papers (among them 174 publications in International Scientific Indexing journals). He has participated in organizing more than 30 conferences and workshops and has led numerous multi-partner research projects at national, European and international levels.
