The WBGU, established in 1992, is made up of independent experts on energy, climate, and environmental research, who provide scientific advice on global environmental and development problems. The researchers suggest policy actions and research pathways to help find solutions to these problems.

Nakicenovic, an expert in energy issues, has served on the board since 2009 and was re-appointed for a second term. Along with Nakicenovic, IIASA Council Chair Peter Lemke was named to the board this year. Lemke heads the Climate Sciences research division at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Ocean Research in Bremen, Germany.
