Resilience determines capacity to successfully confront societal challenges and to adapt and overcome adversity. In an evolving global environment, resilience creates stability, which in turn promotes job creation, economic growth and environmental sustainability.

The conference will kick off discussion between experts, representatives from European Institutions and Member States, stakeholders from industry as well as academia on the continuous process of building a resilient, stable, competitive and prosperous Europe.

The thematic sessions will address:

  • Resilient supplies: energy, food and water security
  • Resilience to disasters: flexibility and ability to adapt existing plan
  • Resilient Europe – Tackling the financial crisis

Kabat will moderate the panel on energy, food and water security, where distinguished panelists will explore essential determinants of resilient and secure supplies.

IIASA and JRC

As the European Commission’s in-house science service, the JRC provides EU policies with independent, evidence based scientific and technical support. IIASA has a longstanding relationship with the JRC, and has collaborated on a multitude of issues.

The IIASA Greenhouse Gas and Air Pollution Interactions and Synergies (GAINS) model has provided a framework for the analysis of co-benefits of reduction strategies from air pollution and greenhouse gas sources. The EU commission has used the GAINS model as the scientific tool to analyze new measures as part of a new clean air policy package announced in December 2013.  Using GAINS, policymakers were able to examine the costs and benefits of every available air pollution control measure.

In September Director General and CEO of IIASA, Professor Dr. Pavel Kabat and Director-General of the JRC, Professor Dr. Vladimír Šucha signed an agreement pledging to enhance collaboration between the two organizations. This new era began with the first joint JRC-IIASA Summer School on Evidence and Policy held in Laxenburg. Bringing together scientists and policymakers from across Europe, the school highlighted the importance of scientists and decision-makers working together to design problem-driven, solution-oriented and policy-relevant research.
