IIASA and the Alpen-Adria-University (AAU) Klagenfurt confirm collaboration

On 16 December Oliver Vitouch, Rector of AAU, and Pavel Kabat, Director General and Chief Executive Officer of IIASA, signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Vienna.

Oliver Vitouch is delighted: "The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, supported by a wide range of nations and institutions, is one of the world leading research institutions in the field of sustainability. The Institute of Social Ecology of the University of Klagenfurt is one of our most efficient research institutes. It is fantastic to see that both of these extraordinary institutions will collaborate more closely in the future. The cooperation and mentoring of dissertations and educational projects combines competence and creates synergies."

Kabat is looking forward to the future collaboration between IIASA and AAU: “As an international institute, IIASA has many partners in different countries, but at the same time it is vitally important to foster research and capacity building partnerships in Austria, our host country. As a center for interdisciplinary excellence, Alpen Adria University is a key partner for IIASA. I look forward to the strengthened cooperation with Alpen Adria University. In particular, this partnership will bring great benefits for the younger generation of scientists at both institutes, who will now have better access to a network of leading interdisciplinary researchers and more opportunities for cooperation and advancement. “

Dean Verena Winiwarter considers the collaboration to present a unique chance: "As an interdisciplinary institution the IFF (Faculty for Interdisciplinary Research and Education of AAU) does not always have an easy stand in the traditional economic system. This is why we are especially pleased to collaborate with such an excellent interdisciplinary partner like IIASA."

At the occasion of the signing of the memorandum AAU organized invited lectures by Verena Winiwarter, scientist of the year 2013, and IIASA Director General Pavel Kabat (presentation slides), in which scientific issues and the future collaboration were discussed.
