Ambassador of the Kyrgyz Republic visits IIASA

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kyrgyz Republic to the Republic of Austria and Permanent Representative of the Kyrgyz Republic to the International Organizations in Vienna H.E. Mr. Bakyt Dzhusupov visited IIASA on 30 October to meet with the Institute's leadership.

Ambassador Dzhusupov was introduced to the Institute's current research agenda, including activities within its research project "Challenges and Opportunities of Economic Integration within a Wider European and Eurasian Space". For his part, he explained the political and economic transformations in Kyrgyzstan and the Central Asian region as a whole.

One of the main topics of discussion was IIASA scientific contribution to the development of the Strategy for the sustainable development of industry of the Kyrgyz Republic for 2019-2023 and the Action Plan for its implementation, which was adopted by decree of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in September 2019. The work on the elaboration of the Strategy was done by IIASA researchers in collaboration with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). IIASA Director General van Jaarsveld stressed that the Kyrgyz Republic can continue to rely on IIASA unique expertise in applied systems analysis. He also submitted a proposal to conduct research on water-energy-economic cooperation in the region, which might be of interest for Kyrgyzstan. 

At the meeting Ambassador Dzhusupov was accompanied by Begaiym Nurlan, Second Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the Kyrgyz Republic to the International Organizations in Vienna, and Director General van Jaarsveld was joined by Elena Rovenskaya, Acting Deputy Director General/CEO, Program Director of the Advanced Systems Analysis Program, Acting Program Director of the Evolution and Ecology Program; Iain Stewart, Head of External Relations, Communications, and Library Department; and Sergey Sizov, Science Diplomacy Officer.
