Heading to the IIASA Regional Conference “Systems Analysis and the Americas” in Rio de Janeiro IIASA Director General and CEO Albert van Jaarsveld visited Brasilia to meet with representatives of the research community, including National Member Organization - Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Educations (CAPES), and policymakers engaged in science and education.

The visit aims at further strengthening scientific cooperation between IIASA and Brazil through joint research projects, scientific exchange and collaborative capacity building activities.

Currently IIASA collaborates with almost 40 research partners in Brazil using systems analysis to better understand global challenges facing the country. Multiple ongoing research projects use systems analysis tools to find best solutions for Brazil in achieving sustainable agriculture and land management strategies with reduction of deforestation. There are also projects which focus on energy, ranging from long‑term energy planning, to learning from Brazil’s leadership in the use of ethanol fuel, to advancing understanding of complex global energy system and its multiple connections with Brazil’s economy, environment, and society.

Albert van Jaarsveld met with Abraham Bragança de Vasconcellos Weintraub, Minister of Education of Brazil; Anderson Correia, President of the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Educations (CAPES); and Mauro Luiz Rabelol, Director of International Affairs at CAPES and IIASA Council Member for Brazil. Among the main topics discussed were capacity building activities at IIASA and how CAPES and IIASA could reinforce collaboration with Brazilian universities to further develop expertise in systems analysis in the country, including through participation in IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program, specialized trainings in model development and application, and postdoctoral scholarship.

IIASA delegation met with Marcos Pontes, Minister of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications of Brazil, to discuss areas of common interest and expand on existing strong collaborations between IIASA and Brazilian research partners such as with the Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute for Graduate Studies and Research in Engineering (COPPE) at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro on IIASA's energy planning model, MESSAGE.

At the meeting with Carlos Von Doellinger, President of the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), and Ivan Oliviera, Director for Studies and International Economic and Political Relations at IPEA, research areas of mutual interest were explored, particularly related to IIASA's collaboration with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on introducing systemic thinking into economic modeling.

A potential workshop on water scenarios was discussed at the meeting of IIASA Director General and CEO with Oscar de Moraes Cordeiro Netto, Director of National Water Agency (ANA) of Brazil.

With senior executives from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), including its Interim President and Executive Director for Research and Development Celso Luiz Moretti, IIASA delegation examined mutually beneficial research projects that combine agricultural research with systems thinking.

Iain Stewart, Head of IIASA External Relations, Communications, and Library Department, and Mauricio Antonio Lopes, Visiting Scholar at IIASA Ecosystems Services and Management Program, accompanied Albert van Jaarsveld during the trip.
