Adil Najam, 1994 YSSP

Dean, Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies; Professor of International Relations and Earth & Environment, Boston University

Prof. Adil Najam is the inaugural Dean of the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston Univeristy and former Vice Chancellor of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) in Lahore, Pakistan. He has also taught at MIT and at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. His research focuses on issues of global public policy, especially those related to global climate change, environment and development, and human development. Having written over a dozen books and 100+ scholarly papers, Prof. Najam was a lead author for the Third and Fourth IPCC Assessments. In 2008 he was invited by the United Nations Secretary General to serve on the UN Committee on Development (CDP), and in 2010 was awarded one of Pakistan’s highest civil honors, the Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Star of Excellence). He is a Trustee of WWF-International, chairs the scientific board of the Luc Hoffmann Institute, and has served as an IIASA Council Member (2012-13).

Regarding his YSSP experience, he states, "IIASA was so much more than just a nice summer at the schloss. It not only broadened the scope of my research and forced me to be truly interdisciplinary, it gave novel ideas, innovative approaches, mentors, networks, and friends that I have carried with me in life. IIASA was eye-opening, but it was also mind-expanding."
