Eric Lambin was awarded the Blue Planet Prize 2019 for his research on global land use and his integrated approach of combining earth observation satellite data with socioeconomic data to highlight the impact of globalization on ecosystems and assess the effectiveness of environmental policies.

Lambin, a geographer and environmental scientist, divides his time between the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium) and Stanford University. His research aims to better understand the causes and impacts of land use changes in different parts of the world and stresses the importance of an international approach to land management beyond national borders, taking into account the effect of globalization on the exploitation of natural ecosystems.

He was an IIASA Science Advisory Committee (SAC) member from January 2004 to December 2008. The SAC was established in 2002 by the IIASA Council – the governing body of the institute – and comprises eminent scientists from around the world to ensure that the institute's work continues to meet the highest standards in terms of both scientific merit and policy relevance.

The SAC advises the Council and the Director General on the scientific strategy for IIASA to fulfill its mission and goals, with a focus on how the institute's science program should evolve to meet emerging global challenges.

The Blue Planet Prize

The Blue Planet Prize goes to outstanding individuals or organizations whose scientific research or applications of science contribute to solving global environmental problems. The prize was created by the Asahi Glass Foundation in 1992, the year of the Rio Earth Summit. Since then the foundation has awarded the prize to two winners every year.
