8. Exploring the RAINS-EMCO Module

This section will serve as a reference manual for all EMCO windows and menu options. The sections are arranged in a logical order.

Not all user options are available in all EMCO modules. If an option is only available in some modules, the pollutant is mentioned in context of the title (e.g., NH3 Emissions by Animals and Sectors which is only available for the EMCO Ammonia module).

The EMCO main window

After loading an EMCO module, the main window with the main menu, the toolbar and its different areas will be displayed. This is a typical window, and it resembles other windows which shall be opened on selection of other menu options. Table 1 in Section 0 describes ways for maneuvering from window to window and for moving through menus using the keyboard and a mouse.

As most other RAINS windows, the EMCO main window contains borders, the title (top-center), a close button (at the top right, shown by ), the 'minimize' and 'maximize' buttons (at the top-right, shown by and respectively) and the system button (top-left, shown by the IIASA icon). The system button is used to select window- or system-specific commands associated with the window (e.g., size, move, minimize and maximize). If menu items are connected with the system button, a pop-up menu will be displayed.
The button resizes the current window from maximum size to 'medium' size. Thus, it's only enabled in case the window is maximized, and it replaces the 'maximize' () button.

Under the title bar are the menu bar with the main menu (described below), and the tool bar with some buttons and two combo-boxes.

The tool bar

Buttons contained in the tool bar are basically 'shortcuts' to menu options contained in other RAINS menus. You are able to compose your own set of tool bar buttons with the File / Preferences option.

To get a list of all existing toolbar buttons click here: All Buttons.

Combo box Year:

The Year combo box lets you select the year for the next step in your calculation. Click on the arrow on the right and select then the desired year.

RAINS 7.2 Europe is implemented for the years 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, and 2010. It is not possible to perform operations for other years.

Combo box Screen/Printer:

EMCO allows you to display model results on screen, or to send it directly to a file or to a printer. Wether output is sent to a file or to a printer depends on the selection in the Print window. If you select "Screen", results will be displayed on screen; if you select "Printer", all output will be treated as defined in the print settings (file or printer).

The bottom bar

The bottom bar displays the following information:

Scenario:

The file name of the currently active (=open) scenario file.

Country:

The country code of the presently selected country.

If several countries are selected, 'More' is displayed. In case no countries are selected, "None" is displayed.

Region:

The region code of the selected region from active country.

If several regions are selected, 'More' is displayed. In case no regions are selected, "None" is displayed.

In the present European implementation of RAINS only Russia and Germany are subdivided into regions. For countries without subregions, 'WHOL'(E) is displayed in this field.

Energy:

The selected energy consumption pathway for the country/region. The energy pathway is taken from the presently active scenario (or EAS) file, whose name appears in the Scenario field of the bottom bar.

The tool bar buttons

The following tool bar buttons are available in RAINS-EMCO. For details, simply click on them.

To add or remove toolbars to/from your tool bar, use the File / Preferences option.

Main menu and sub-menus

The main menu of EMCO contains the following menu options. Click on the options to obtain a description of the associated sub-menus.

Note: The > mark represents a sub-menu associated with that option (or item).

File sub-menu

The File option opens a sub-menu with the following items: ,

Note: The > mark indicates a submenu associated with the option .

Energy submenu

(only for EMCO NOx and SO2)

The Energy option provides you with a facility to view the energy database selected (groups of) countries/regions. The energy database distinguishes various fuel types and economic sectors. The following options are available:

In short, these options allow you to view energy consumption databases as well as databases with activity levels for industrial processes for each individual region. Information is displayed for previously selected year and scenario (energy pathway from the active EAS file).

Control strategy menu

The control strategy menu contains the .

Emissions sub menu

Similar to the Energy option of main menu, this Emissions option provides you with a facility to view calculated emissions of the pollutant under study by fuel types, economic sectors or - in case of ammonia - by animal and by agricultural sectors. It is also possible to view various parameters used for emissions calculations (e.g., sulfur content of fuels, emission factors, removal efficiencies of control technologies etc.).
The following menu/sub-menus appear on selection of this option:.

Menu path:

Emissions >

Costs sub menu

The Costs option allows to calculate and display emission abatement costs for the scenario and pollutant under study. Besides, it is also possible to create and view control cost curves.
The following sub-options are available:

Menu path:

Costs >

Window option

This menu provides various options for arranging the RAINS windows on your screen. These are

Help options

The Help sub-menu provides on-line help.

Since the RAINS help-system is HTML based, you need a HTML browser (Web-Browser) to use it.
