This section of the manual explains all DEP windows and menu options. The sections are arranged in a logical sequence, mainly following the main menu.
Loading DEP brings the main window with the DEP main menu on the screen. Section 0 of this manual describes ways for maneuvering from window to window and for moving through menus using keyboard and mouse.
RAINS windows contain borders, (top-centered) titles, the 'minimize' and
'maximize' buttons (top-right, shown with
and
respectively) and the 'system' button
(top-left, shown as the RAINS icon). The system button is used to select window-
or system-specific commands associated with the window (e.g., size, move,
minimize and maximize). If any menu items are specified with the system button,
a pop-up menu is displayed. The
button resizes the current window from maximum
size to 'medium' size. Thus, it is only enabled in case the window is maximized,
otherwise the 'maximize' button (
) is displayed.
The close
button
of DEP Main window allows you to perform
the same action as with the File / Exit option.
The main menu is displayed in the menu bar of the main window and provides access to the various features of DEP.
The following links connect to the descriptions of the most relevant options of the DEP main menu:.
On selection of the File option from the main menu, the following sub-menu appears, with the options ..
The Model option is the heart of the DEP module, and has five sub-options:
The Map option from the main menu enables you to modify the appearance of the map window. It has the following sub-options.
The Calculate option allows you to combine/modify current data. It is especially useful for many tasks occurring in sensitivity analysis, for creating fields of target deposition for the optimization module and for conversion of data into other units.
The following mathematical operators are available:
The Window option manages the display of multiple maps in DEP. The following options are available:
The Help option calls the on-line help system.
Before describing each option in detail, this manual will describe some of the important DEP windows which are opened on selection of the options from main menu or its sub-options. However, each of these windows will be explained in detail together with the descriptions of the option wherever they appear.
The Combine window enables the combination of grid data from two maps, using a variety of mathematical operators.
Formula:
In the first line (just below the title bar), a Formula prompt appears. You have to specify the mathematical operation (in the combo box in the center of the window) and to assign weights to the values of the two maps (for the 'old', i.e., the current map and for the 'new', i.e., the selected map). The following mathematical operaters are available:
(where "fact1" and "fact2" are multiplicative factors for old and selected new values, respectively)
Missing values:
In many cases maps or data files do not contain values for all grids in the modelling domain. Thus, you must provide instructions on how missing values should be treated. A special combo box lists the available options, i.e., the conditions under which a new data item will be produced:
In case the selected condition is not fullfilled for a grid, no result will be produced for this grid.
The Data browser window is invoked by a click with the right mouse button on one of the EMEP grids in the Map window. It displays detailed information about the grid values.
In case the current map was loaded from an external database (e.g., using the File / Load option) this window shows the EMEP coordinates and all information stored in the database about the selected grid.
If the current map was generated using one of the Model options, the data browser shows different behaviour.
The Data browser window also provides the possibility to save displayed tables into a file. Click on the SAVE AS button and enter a filename in the Get Name panel.
Using the wizard technique, RAINS-DEP helps you to master the complex critical loads assessment. Wizards are series of special windows explaining the essentials of the ongoing calculations and asking you in a structured form the necessary questions to obtain the relevant information.
Wizards are connected with the following user options:
How to use wizards:
The wizard displays a sequence of several pages with context-specific information and asks some questions to you. You have to make at least one selection on every page. You can step from one page to the next using the NEXT button. If you want to revise earlier choices, you can step backwards using the BACK button.
After you went through all pages, you 'arrive' at the last page, where a FINISH button is displayed instead of the NEXT button. If you are satisfied with all selections, press FINISH to run the calculation. The CANCEL button stops the hole operation and returns to DEP. HELP provides you with on-line help.
Wizard pages:
After receiving some brief explanation about the assessment procedure, you will be asked to specify
This page is used to select the environmental problem, i.e., whether you want to evaluate critical loads' achievement for acidification or eutrophication. Select one of them in the combo box and step forward with NEXT.
About the Ecosystem exceedance wizard.
This page occurs only if the current Map window contains already a calculated deposition pattern. In such a case you can use this pattern by selecting YES (useful for multiple evaluations of the same deposition pattern). If you want to recalculate deposition, or to select other emission scenarios or another target year, choose NO.
About the Ecosystem exceedance wizard.
If you do not want to use the currently loaded deposition pattern, you have to specify the desired target year. The combo box offers the choice between 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, and 2010.
About the Ecosystem exceedance wizard.
You have to select one scenario for every relevant pollutant. Which
pollutants are respected depends on the environmental problem you selected in
the Acidification/eutrophication
page.
Select one of the existing scenarios. (The prompt above the list
displays for which pollutant you have to select it.)
To select a scenario,
just click at the radio button of the desired scenario. (Multiple selection is
not allowed.)
About the Ecosystem exceedance wizard.
The Select percentile page allows you to select the percentile of the critical loads for which the excess deposition is to be calculated.
About the Ecosystem exceedance wizard.
This is the last of the Ecosystem
exceedance wizard pages. It is used to start the calculation.
Instead of the NEXT button you see a FINISH button. If you think that
all settings are correctly done, press FINISH to start the calculation.
After running the calculation, the Ecosystem Exceedance panel will hide
and the current
Map will display the results.
About the Ecosystem exceedance wizard.
The Edit sets window enables you to create, edit and delete
source sets of countries which may be used by other options. A source set is a
set of countries/regions.
Source sets are stored in the RAINS user files. A
source set can include more than one set definitions.
The Edit sets window contains a menu bar, two prompts "Current file name" and "Current selected set", and a scrollable list of countries ("Selected sources").
Current file name displays the name of the currently loaded file in which the sets are stored. If no file is opened, this prompt is empty.
Current selected set displays the name of the currently selected source set. If no set is selected, this prompt is empty.
Selected sources list displays which regions are currently selected for the currently selected source set. If a country is selected, the check box beside it is marked (highlighted).
The Edit sets menu provides the following user options:
This menu provides all options referring to the files where the source sets are stored.
This option opens the Select a set window. Here you can either select existing files (already stored in the specified directory) or create new files.
To create a new file, just enter the desired name behind the Selected set prompt and confirm with OK. The Edit sets window will immediately display the new name behind the Current file name prompt.
To save your changings use Sets / Save or Sets / Save as.
This option opens existing files. From the Select a set window you can select one of the listed names at the list and confirm with OK to open the referring file.
This option deletes existing files. From the Select a set window you can select one of the listed names at the list and confirm with OK to delete the referring file.
This option exits the Edit sets window and returns to DEP. Using
Windows95 the same action is performed by the
button on the right side of the title bar of the Edit sets window.
This menu provides all user options referring to the source sets.
The Select a set window displays all source sets which are stored in the currently open file stored. You can select one of them and confirm with OK or abort this action with CANCEL.
OTHER - this set includes all remaining regions which are not selected in one of the sets displayed in the list. It is automatically created by DEP.
This option saves the current selection under the name of the current source set (as displayed at the Current selected set prompt).
This option lets you save the current selected set under a user defined name. After selection, a Get name panel appears. Enter the desired name and confirm with OK or abort with CANCEL.
The Delete option delets existing source set definitions from the current file. This option displays a Get Name panel, where you may enter the name of an existing source set. If you confirm with OK, the set definition is removed from the list. If you not want to remove a definition, press CANCEL.
Using the File selection window, you can load a file from a particular drive and directory and use standard Windows facilities for deleting a file or specifying names for new files. The basic features are equal for all types of File selection windows. If appropiate, some windows restrict the file types, i.e., they prescribe certain extensions for the selectable files.
The File selection window is accessed by the user options:
On the left top of this window, you have to type the file name of the desired type (e.g., of a database file) next to the "File Name" prompt. Although there is always a default filename provided, you can select a different file from the list of available files displayed in middle rightmost (vertical scrollable) list window.
On the bottom right, the default drive and directory path is displayed, specifying the location where the program searches for the given file. You can edit the drive and the directory by selecting from the combo boxes.
The OK button confirms the selection (change) and exits the window. The CANCEL button allows you to exit the window without changing the present status of the selected file. The HELP button will display the on-line help.
General overview: The DEP Module or Exploring RAINS-DEP.
The Map window displays a map of the EMEP area with or without data. Since any operation available in the sub-menus will be performed for an 'active' map, it is always necessary to have a Map window open before starting options of the sub-menus. The Map window can be opened using the File / New option.
The titlebar shows either the filename of the currently loaded map or in case the map was created using one of the model options information about the settings that were used. This is for instance which option was used, what is the environmental problem, etc.
The bottombar is visible only in case that the current map was created using one of the model options. In this case it shows information about the used scenarios (names, year, etc.).
Cursor position and grid value:
Just below the title line of the Map window there are three small boxes providing information of the activated grid, i.e., the current position of the cursor (the coordinates of the EMEP grid system), and the data value for the activated grid. Detailed information about the data for the activated grid can be obtained by a click on the right mouse button. A Data browser window will display the present EMEP coordinates and all other data for this grid which are currently loaded in the memory.
The combo box on the top right of the Map window allows you to select wether you want the legend to be displayed or not - just by selecting 'Legend on' or 'Legend off'.
The combo box displays the currently selected source set. You can change the selection source set by clicking into the combo box. The combo box will display all currently available source sets. A change in this combo box will effect the data displayed in the Data browser. See Edit source groups to learn how to create or change source sets.
Once a map is displayed in the window, you can zoom into subregions of the map. To mark the new region, point the arrow pointer (mouse cursor) to desired position, press the left button of the mouse (to mark top-left of the marked portion) and, without releasing the left button of the mouse, drag the mouse to the opposite corner of the desired area. Then release the left button (to mark bottom-right of the marked portion). You will immediately see this marked portion being enlarged and occupying the full Map window.
If you click one-times into a particular grid, the grid will be selected and the referring deposition value will be displayed in the toolbar on top of the window.
If you perform a double click (or click another time into the grid), you can change the value of this grid: Just click into the third box of the top bar of this DEP Map and change the value in it. After pressing <RETURN> the value is changed. If necessary, also the shading of the grid is automatically updated.
If you want to save your changings, use the Save as ... option. If you don't save your changes, the old data will be kept in the data file.
Basically you may open as many Map windows as you desire. The only restriction is established by the available memory on your computer. If there are more than one Map window open, then the operations to be performed will always be applied to the currently activated Map window. (The activated window has a highlighted title-bar, e.g. blue). Data have to be loaded for each individual new window, providing you with the option of comparing maps with different data.
This Multiple load window allows you to select one or several fields. Furthermore, grid data from multiple fields can be combined using a four types of rules:
In center of the window, the user has to select from the fields available in the open database window (File selection window) .
Clicking the OK button will confirm the selection, while the CANCEL will ignore the changes and return to the earlier point. The HELP button will call the on-line help system.
The Save to field window appears after selection of the Save as ... option and is used to store data from the current map into a data field of a new or an existing database file. Each map will occupy one field of the database.
NOTE: Please note, that Save as ... saves always the entire map and not the currently selected area.
The list below the "Select field" prompt shows you all available fields. Some of them (e.g., the coordinates EMEPX, EMEPY) are disabled (grey). You can either select one of the existing fields (i.e., one of those with an associated check box) or create a new field by pressing the Add field button. Note that, if you want to store data into a new field, you have to select it after its creation by pressing the check box.
Confirm the save with the OK button, or abort with CANCEL.
Subwindow:
The Add field window creates a new data field in the
currently loaded database file.
To create a new field just enter a short
name (max. 8 characters) into the first field entry, a 'long' name (description)
into the second entry and the unit into the 'Unit field'. After confirming with
OK, Save to Fielddisplays the new field.
CANCEL aborts the 'add field' operation, HELP displays online help.
In order to guide you through the steps necessary for the calculation of some options, RAINS assists you with a special wizard.
A wizard consists of several pages (the wizard pages) with brief context-speficic information and concrete questions to be answered. You have to make at least one selection on every page. You can step from one page to the next using the NEXT button. If you want to revise earlier choices, you can step backwards using the BACK button.
After you went through all pages you 'arrive' at the last page, where a FINISH button is displayed instead of the NEXT button. If you are satisfied with all selections, press FINISH to run the calculation. The CANCEL button stops the hole operation and returns to DEP. HELP provides you with on-line help.
