The main objectives of PSI in 2015 have been to provide guidance for decision making and analysis, as well as communicating ESM results to decision makers and the general public. In 2015 PSI largely focused its activities on optimizing integrated solar, wind, and hydro power systems in close interactions with ecosystems services in a spatially explicit manner while accounting for socioeconomic parameters. Furthermore, in the area of negative emissions, the group concentrated on the reconciliation of bottom-up versus top-down modeling, which bridges multiple internal ESM groups and their models.
Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program researchers and partners developed a decision support system (DSS) for the entire Alpine region, aiming at quantifying renewable energy potentials balanced with ecosystem services protection. More
Collaborative land-use modeling work between IIASA, the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF), the World Wildlife Fund Indonesia, and the Bandung Institute of Technology in Indonesia was further developed in 2015 under the Tropical Futures Initiative (TFI). More
The Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program’s Policy and Science Interface (PSI) group has advanced research into negative emissions technologies—ways of removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere—investigating whether they are a viable way of tackling climate change. More
