The ICES Working Group on Fisheries-Induced Evolution (WGEVO), co-chaired by two of EEP’s senior scientists, was convened three times in 2015, with two of these meetings taking place at IIASA. Addressing scientific and applied dimensions of fisheries-induced evolution, WGEVO continued its intensive work on evolutionary impact assessments and on estimating fisheries-induced selection pressures. The latter consortium-based effort is devising software tools, in the R language widely used in fisheries science and management, for the integration of evolutionary dimensions into routine stock assessments. The results of this multi-year effort are now becoming available and provide the first-ever overview of fisheries-induced selection pressures across a wide variety of stocks and a range of salient life-history traits.
ICES is not only the main advisory agency for managing the North Atlantic Ocean and adjacent seas, but also the world’s oldest intergovernmental organization concerned with marine and fisheries science.
