Community database infrastructure for major international energy initiatives

Given IIASA’s role as host of the datasets for the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) and Global Energy Assessment (GEA), the Energy (ENE) and Transitions to New Technologies (TNT) programs in 2013 developed a more sophisticated community database infrastructure.

The new community database infrastructure is currently being used in more than 12 international multi-model applications.

Building upon the role as a hub for scenario databases within the integrated assessment modeling community and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the databases are currently applied at the development stages of these projects. They are assisting with quality control and comparability of data sets from different modeling groups.

After completion of the respective studies, they will be used for data dissemination to the scientific community as well as to the general public.

This resource has developed into an important service to the integrated assessment modeling community, with demand being substantial: online site requests and downloads amounted to over 2,000,000 in 2013 from an average of 1,500 unique users each month.
