Much of the science, technology and innovation (STI) effort related to the SDGs has been focused on how STI policy was being promoted so as to implement SDG related activities both in government and in civil society
Policy making is ultimately about making choices between options that affect different stakeholders in different ways and inevitably involve spillover effects – both positive and negative – and tradeoffs. It is a consideration of these alongside fiscal and political considerations that must dominate in policy making. Furthermore, the large number of targets and indicators within the SDG framework can overwhelm policy making.
International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA) and International Science Council (ISC) set out to address this challenge on the premise that more rapid progress could be made across a broad front if the SDGs could be linked to the bottom-up processes that determine policy-making in country. They proposed that the use of interaction analysis (at the level of targets) could create a tool that linked the SDGs with policy making, prioritisation, measurement, and the local frameworks that drive domestic policy. If this was possible it would create a mechanism to achieve ‘policy pull’ by the SDGs in a domestically useful and acceptable manner.
Around 20 experts will meet at IIASA for this brainstorming meeting which will also be attended by several IIASA researchers working on the SDGs.
The World in 2050 (TWI2050) initiative
The TWI2050 initiative endeavors to demonstrate how the objectives of sustainable development within planetary boundaries can be met, ensuring prosperity, social inclusion, and good governance for all. TWI2050 is a global research initiative launched by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), and the Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC). The initiative brings together a network of more than 150 participants that includes leading policymakers, analysts, modeling and analytical teams from 60 organizations from around the world to collaborate in developing pathways toward sustainable futures and the policy frameworks needed for implementing the SDGs, and more importantly, for achieving the needed transformational change.
