Renewable Energy and Sustainability of Biofuels

This project serves to support the European Commission in their 2014 reporting requirements in the frame of the Renewable Energy Directive 2009/28/EC.

This assessment for the European Commission will be based on a detailed analysis of the progress reports submitted by each of the 27 EU Member States, complemented by additional sources and the extensive experience the consortium members have on all aspects addressed in Article 22 of the Renewable Energy Directive.

Project partners and roles:

  • Ecofys is project coordinator 
  • IIASA analyses the impact from the increased use of biofuels in 2009 and 2010 on land-use, food prices and food affordability 
  • Fraunhofer focuses on the assessment of progress in renewable energy; TU Wien focuses on the projected progress of renewable energy by 2020 
  • Becker Büttner Held focuses on the functioning of guarantee of origin systems and improvements in administrative procedures
  • Stockholm Environmental Institute focuses on environmental impacts and advises on local socioeconomic impacts
