Russian regions on the demographic world map

World Population Program (POP) Deputy Director Sergei Scherbov was the keynote speaker at the Gaidar Forum expert discussion session themed around Russian regions on the demographic world map. The session was centred around the results of the Russian Demographic Datasheet 2019 produced at IIASA. Experts discussed the comparison of regional demographic data with other countries; the possibility of using the Human Life Indicator, an alternative new measure to the Human Development Index that takes into account differences in life expectancy developed at IIASA; evaluation of regional demographic development; Russian regions’ population projection until 2050; and population differentiation of Russian regions. The first Aging Demographic Data Sheet that comprehensively presents new measures of aging, developed at IIASA, for all countries in the world and world regions, including projections for 2050, was presented at the high-level Gaidar Forum on 18 January 2018 in Moscow. In the dedicated session at the conference, keynote speaker Sergei Scherbov presented the methodological background of the applied alternative indicators of population ageing and the major results to journalists, scientists and policy makers from across Russia.

Rethinking population aging

Life expectancies in the EU have increased significantly over the past decades and are expected to continue increasing. Age-specific health statuses have also generally been improving. In contrast to these profound changes, the concepts that demographers have used to analyze aging on a population level have remained largely static. The substantial changes in life expectancy and health status have rendered these traditional demographic measures inadequate for the analysis of aging at the population level in the 21st century.
