Symposium and Celebrations: Demography that Matters

40 years population research at IIASA, 5 years Wittgenstein Centre and 40 years Vienna Institute of Demography will be celebrated at this high level symposium.

On occasion of several anniversaries, IIASA's World Population Program together with it's partners at the Wittgenstein Centre, is hosting a high level symposium  under the title "Demography that Matters". The symposium will take place on 9th September 2015 at the new campus of the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU). The event will include an extended presentation of the research highlights and plans followed by festivities.

Presentation of research highlights and plans

Researchers from the three pillar institutions of the Wittgenstein Centre (IIASA, VID/ÖAW, WU) will present selected research findings and research ideas for the future in the themes
Population Dynamics and Migration, Human Reproduction, Ageing and its Consequences, and Population and Sustainable Development.

Festive Event

The festivities will begin with welcome addresses from Pavel Kabat, Director General/CEO at IIASA, Christoph Badelt, Rector at the WU, and Anton Zeilinger, ÖAW President, as well as high level Austrian politicans Rudolf Hundstorfer, Minister for Social Affairs, and Sophie Karmasin, Minister for Family.

Wolfgang Lutz, Program Director at IIASA's World Population Program and Founding Director at the Wittgenstein Centre, will reminisce about how it began 40 years ago together with Gerhart Bruckmann and Andrei Rogers.

Wittgenstein Centre Scientific Advisory Board Chair Sir Partha DasGupta will discuss the sustainable development challenges of our day with Martin Lees and Sigrid Stagl.

Moderated by Bill Butz, Wittgenstein Centre Directors Alexia Fürnkranz-Prskawetz, Sergei Scherbov, Jesus Crespo Cuaresma and Wolfgang Lutz will conclude the festive event in a roundtable discussion on how demography matters in the 21st century. 

Exhibition

From 7th to 12th September, Population Europe presents the exhibition "100 Jahre alt werden, aber wie" (Living to 100 years old, but how?) at WU Vienna in cooperation with the Ministry of Social Affairs. For more information please visit the exhibition website.
