IIASA at Understanding Risk Austria Conference

Representing IIASA in a panel discussion on ‘Risk at the Local Level’ (Riskio auf Gemeindeebene), RISK Deputy Director Reinhard Mechler presented insight gained from recent work conducted by the Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance using the Post-Event Review Capability (PERC) approach.

Developed by Michael Szönyi of Zurich Risk Engineering and adopted across the Alliance, this methodology allows for a quick and thorough post-event analysis of the context, root causes and consequences of a disaster, helping to identify actionable recommendations for future disaster risk reduction policy and practice.

The Alliance - consisting of IIASA, Zurich Insurance, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), Practical Action, and the Wharton Risk Management Center - has employed this methodology in seven studies so far.

The Understanding Risk Austria conference in Vienna, part of the Global Understanding Risk Forum initiative lead by the GFDRR and the World Bank, took place in Vienna from 20-21 January and featured expert opinions from both Austria and the wider international community in eight separate sessions.
