German "Energiewende" in the Global Context

IIASA's Dr. Nakicenovic will participate in a public panel discussion alongside three other leading global experts to discuss Germany's energy transition within a global context, touching on past lessons and pitfalls for the low-carbon energy transition.

Germany's energy transition is high on the political agenda. Yet there are still a lot of open questions if Germany is to become a global model for the low-carbon energy transformation.  The public panel discussion, co-organized by the German Development Institute and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung with the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), is open to the public and seeks plenty of audience participation and intervention.

Along side Deputy Director General Nebojsa Nakicenovic, other Panelists include:

  • Claudia Kemfert, Head of Department “Energy, Transportation, Environment”, German Institute for Economic Research / Deutsches Institut für Wirtschaftsforschung (DIW)
  • Dirk Messner (moderator), Director, German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) & Co-Chair, German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU)
  • Jeffrey D. Sachs, Director, Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) & Director, The Earth Institute at Columbia University

The panel will discuss topics such as: What is expected from the German “Energiewende”? Is energy transition primarily a technical or a sociopolitical challenge? And how can the international community organise joint learning on technical and political solutions for sustainable transformation?
