Organized by the University of SalzburgÖsterreich forschtSchweiz forschtBürger schaffen WissenCenter for Citizen Science, and the Austrian Science FundThe Austrian Citizen Science Conference will bring together scientists, practitioners and citizens to discuss challenges and opportunities that citizen science presents. The main focus of the conference will be how to create a generation of Citizen Scientists that is more engaged in science.

IIASA scientists will give a presentation on citizen science data and peer-reviewed publications at the event, based on the Geo-Wiki experience, the citizen science platform of IIASA aiming at engaging citizens in environmental monitoring.

IIASA and Citizen Science

Citizen science is a way for citizens to become involved in a range of different scientific activities, from research design to environmental data collection and analysis. Through citizen science, citizens can play a critical role in advancing scientific knowledge, as well as preserving and protecting the natural environment,  without the need to have a science background.

Citizen science can help to greatly accelerate scientific research and provide valuable information that would otherwise be difficult to obtain due to time and cost constraints. At the same time and perhaps more importantly, citizen scientists can bring local knowledge to research.

IIASA researchers at the Earth Observation Systems (EOS) Research Group have been running various citizen science projects, e.g. FotoQuest GoPicture PileField SizeCropland Validation, etc. through Geo-Wiki, a platform for engaging citizens in environmental monitoring.
