Land Use/Land-Use Change Vision Workshop

The LUC Vision Workshop is organized by Brazil’s Center for Strategic Management and Studies (CGEE), together with Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) and the Austrian-based International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA).

By taking advantage of both the momentum generated at the Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development1 and in the run-up to the IIASA 40th Anniversary Conference2, the objective of the Land Use / Land-use Change Vision Workshop is twofold:

  1. To provide the skeleton for a larger-scale, multi-institutional, internationally supported proposal for a scientific study, which addresses the challenge of sustainable land use / land use change (LUC) in meeting emission constraints in the future (e.g., 2050 and beyond). The country suggested to be in the center of the study is Brazil, representative for other countries for which agriculture and biomass commodities constitute an important part of their GDP. Nonetheless, the study is embedded in a globally consistent context. The research proposal will be presented at the IIASA 40th Anniversary Conference.
  2. To submit a background paper for the support of the research proposal to a well-known scientific
journal after the IIASA 40th Anniversary Conference / before the end of 2012.

Participation in the Land Use / Land-use Change Vision Workshop is by invitation only. Participants are expected to contribute to the objectives of the Workshop.
