Citizen Science Center

Engaging Citizens in Environmental
Monitoring

The IIASA Citizen Science Center (CSC) is dedicated to research into the growing opportunities arising from spatial citizen science to address the most pressing areas of global change  –  energy and climate change, food and water, poverty and equity and their main drivers.

Today's increasingly globalized world is characterized by fundamental shifts in economic and political power, growing global environmental problems, and potentially explosive social conflicts. Enhanced knowledge and understanding of these complex and interdependent problems are needed to help decision makers chart a successful course through them.

Citizens now have the means to provide vast amounts of spatial information. The analysis and exploitation of this georeferenced data has the potential to fundamentally change the nature of scientific investigation. Citizens have a long history of involvement in scientific research e.g. volunteer recording of bird sightings. Recent analysis of more passive sources of geo-tagged data from the crowd has also revealed interesting scientific trends.

The CSC establishes an interdisciplinary partnership among research institutions engaged in the application of citizen science data to environmental monitoring.
