Marijn van der Velde is a Research Scholar with IIASA's Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program. His research focuses on the management and interactions of agriculture and natural resources under increasing societal demands and climate change including extreme events. Large-scale assessments of crop growth, food production, bio-energy and their impacts on the environment are performed with the aim of contributing toward the quest for sustainable and economically feasible adaptation and mitigation options for land and water use from the regional to the global scale. Central to these activities is the combination of data (measurements) and models - for instance combining crop modeling (EPIC) with analysis of experimental crop trials performed around the world. He is also active in evaluating crowd-sourcing applications including the mining of web search data for environmental applications and analyzing the quality of user generated data in the context of http://www.geo-wiki.org.
Dr. van der Velde obtained his MSc in physical geography and soil science from the University of Amsterdam (NL) and his PhD in environmental sciences from the University of Louvain (LLN, BE) which was partly carried out at Plant and Food Research (NZ). His thesis covers the impacts of agriculture, climate variability and economic development on the freshwater resources of a small island developing state (Tonga). Dr. van der Velde continued his work on the predictability of climate variability impacts on island water resources with a NOAA Climate & Global Change Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Earth Institute of Columbia University (NY, USA). Prior to joining IIASA, Dr. van der Velde was a Research Scientist at the Institute of Environment and Sustainability of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, where he worked on large-scale agri-environmental modeling.
