Citizens add to Forest Cover Map

ESM researchers Marijn van der Velde, Linda See and Steffen Fritz recently wrote a Correspondence in Nature to illustrate how ‘crowd sourcing’ initiatives can complement remote sensing data.

About the Correspondence

The authors presented ways how citizens can contribute to protection of forests against illegal practices with on the ground data that at the same time can be used to improve forest maps derived from satellite information.

An insightful and entertaining cartoon drawn by S. Harris (who holds the Copyright; http://www.sciencecartoonsplus.com) was inspired by this Correspondence.
