Hannes Böttcher joined the Ecosystems Services and Management (ESM) Program (formerly Forestry Program) in January 2007 as a Research Scholar. He first came to IIASA as a participant in the 2004 Young Scientists Summer Program.
Following studies in Germany and Estonia, Dr. Böttcher received his MSc degree in forest sciences and ecology from the University of Gottingen (Germany) focusing on forest ecosystem modeling and information processing. From October 2003, Dr. Böttcher worked at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena where he investigated the impact of forest management on the regional carbon balance. His work included the development and application of a forestry carbon budget model, the basis of his PhD thesis which he completed in 2007.
Recently, Dr. Böttcher worked on and published research on the effects of different greenhouse gas accounting rules in the land use, land use change and forestry sector (LULUCF) with the help of land use models. He also assesses the potential of reduced emissions from deforestation and analyzes options for including it in a global climate agreement. He is currently a lead author of the IPCC Report "2013 Supplementary Methods and Good Practice Guidance Arising from the Kyoto Protocol".
Within the ESM Program, Dr. Böttcher coordinates research for several projects focusing on:
- Projections of LULUCF sector’s sinks and sources of greenhouse gases
- Global forest management and bioenergy potentials from forests
- Land use implications of bioenergy options
- Quantification of greenhouse gas emissions from global deforestation and analysis of options for their reduction.
