Advanced Systems Analysis

ASA’s overall objective is to conduct cutting edge research in systems analysis and to provide a substantial basis for tying together systems methods and applied research on global problems.

At the core of IIASA’s research is advanced systems analysis, which uses mathematical models and analytical techniques to investigate complex systems with a focus on an integrated, interdisciplinary approach. The institute has long been involved in developing new, more sophisticated methodologies for systems analysis so that better solutions to global problems can be found. The ASA Program is aimed at advancing in this type of research.

ASA’s research strategy includes:

  • Development of new systems-analytic methods rooted in IIASA’s applied research
  • Development of feedback between systems methods and applied research on global change
  • Demonstration to a broad scientific audience of new knowledge obtained through the use of the new methods.

ASA’s key research questions often are beyond the traditional framework of systems research and include:

  • Control of heterogeneous dynamical systems
  • Assessment of fragile dynamical networks
  • Optimal decisions for economic development
  • Identification of signals on critical changes
  • Attainability domains for uncertain dynamical systems
  • Formation of dynamic games
  • Synthesis of integrated knowledge from alternative models
