Water Nexus Policy Strategic Planning Workshop

Water is a truly cross-sectorial resource that has an impact on population well-being, economic growth, and environment. Developing resilient (“no-regret”) water strategies given conflicting interests and great uncertainty is of the highest importance for the sustainable development of any country.

This workshop organized by IIASA in partnership with Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) involves a group of senior officials who will take part in a gamified participatory capacity development process.

This process aims to aid participants to acquire a deeper understanding of the role of uncertainty in decision making, to get experience in developing a resilient water strategy and to raise their awareness about strategic planning methods taking into account the nexus of water with other sectors – notably, food and energy. These methods include, in particular, the analysis of mutually-influencing factors, systems mapping, morphological analysis, scenario building, and multi-criteria decision analysis.

The central part of the process consists of a two-day workshop co-organized by IIASA and OECD. In the format of a live game, the participants will be exposed to selected elements of the strategic planning and will co-design a resilient strategy for a country to move towards achieving SDG6 Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
