Labor market and migration across the Eurasian continent

This was the sixth workshop in the framework of the IIASA’s project “Challenges and Opportunities of Economic Integration within a wider European and Eurasian Space”. The workshop aimed to discuss the impact of migration flows on the sustainable development of the Eurasian region, the labor market challenges, and the potential for harmonization of education systems in the EU and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

The Eurasian continent accounts for about a half of the world population living in countries with vast diversity of cultural and physical environments. On-going political instabilities, war conflicts, low standards of living and poverty are among major drivers motivating significant flows of migration across the continent. How the challenges arising from unforeseen migration can be tackled?

This workshop discussed and analyzed possible scenarios of cross-border migration (both labor migration and refugee flows) and changing structure of the labor force and their economic, and social implications for the labor markets and economic growth of source and host countries/regions in the EU, EAEU and countries of the joint neighborhood. It also considered such practical aspects as prospects of introducing visa-free regime between the EU and EAEU, enhancing mobility of pensions, fostering educational and academic exchange, and mutual recognition of diplomas.

High-level plenary session

This high-level session reflected on the long-term prospects of economic cooperation between the enlarged EU, the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and their neighbors, including the key Asian players, such as China, Korea, and Japan, as well as the USA, focusing also on the impact of migration flows on the sustainable development of the Eurasian region, and the labor market challenges. The session chaired by Pavel Kabat included talks by Tatyana Valovaya, Václav Klaus, Jeffrey D. Sachs and Péter Balás as well as the panel discussion involving Evgeny Vinokurov, Peter Havlik and Jesus Crespo Cuaresma.
