IIASA Arctic Futures Initiative (AFI) - Meetings in Washington DC with U.S. Arctic policy representatives

Special Advisor to the IIASA Director General and Chief Executive Officer, Ambassador Hannu Halinen, co-chair of the Arctic Futures Initiative (AFI) and IIASA Guest Research Scholar Anni Reissell visited Washington DC on 14-18 June 2015  in connection to the Arctic Council’s Executive Senior Arctic Official (SAO) meeting. Several meetings took place as satellite meetings to the main meeting.

Hannu Halinen and Anni Reissell met the Arctic Council (AC) US chairmanship: Admiral Robert J. Papp, Jr., U.S. Special Representative for the Arctic; Ambassador David Balton, Chair of the Senior Arctic Officials and Ms. Julia Gourley, U.S. Senior Arctic Official.  The warm-hearted meeting addressed potential ways to collaborate with the U.S. chairmanship, U.S. research communities, the Arctic Council and U.S. policy representative to the AFI Advisory Board. AFI will keep Admiral Papp, Ambassador Balton and SAO Julia Gourley informed about upcoming events, for example invited to the AFI high-level meeting at IIASA 1-3 December.

For example, representatives from Department of the Interior (Office of Policy Analysis, Office of Collaborative Action and Dispute Resolution, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Bureau of Land Management), Department of Energy (Office of Science), and U.S. Global Change Research Program attended the Arctic Resilience Report Workshop on “One Arctic, Multiple Possible Futures?” held at the House of Sweden.

Meeting with Dr. John Farrell, Executive Director of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission (USARC) is leading to increasing communication, collaboration and connections to the USARC and also to U.S. Government agencies.

Meeting with Senior Vice President Heather A. Conley at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) as well the Arctic Experts Dialogue workshop on “Arctic Council Governance Opportunities and Challenges” belonging to series of events by the research project between CSIS and Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Special Unit for Policy Planning and Research) will also contribute to increasing collaboration between the U.S. communities working on the Arctic and AFI.
