The Institute of the North’s 2015 Arctic Energy Summit builds on legacy efforts to address energy as a fundamental element of the sustainable development of the Arctic as a lasting frontier. Central to this concept is a focus on providing pathways for affordable energy development in the Arctic and for Arctic communities. The 2015 Summit foci are Prudent Exploration and Production of Oil and Gas, Renewable Energy Development and Energy Efficiency, Power and Heat in Remote Communities.

The Summit is highly participatory and interactive, with outcomes delivered to the Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG) of the Arctic Council during the U.S. Chairmanship.

Traditional and local welcome are presented by Chief Victor Joseph, President of Tanana Chiefs Conference and Karl Kassel, Presiding Officer, Assembly, Fairbanks North Star Borough. Introduction and welcome are by Nils Andreassen from Institute of the North, Rex Rock, President and CEO of ASRC, and Senator Lisa Murkowski from United States Senate.

Security and Affordability for a Resilient North is approached by Minister Ragnheiour Elín Árnadóttir, Ministry of Industries and Innovation, Iceland, and Admiral Robert Papp, Special Representative for the Arctic Region, U.S. Department of State. Sustainable and Prudent Development Activities in the Arctic by Ole Anders Lindseth, Ministry of Petroleum and Energy, Norway.

The plenary and concurrent sessions include, for example, Collaboration and Capability of Oil and Gas Industry Emergency Prevention, Preparedness and Response; Human Security and Social Impact of Energy Industries; Strategic Planning in the Arctic: A System Design Approach.

IIASA Arctic Futures Initiative will be presented in the Arctic Economic Council (AEC) Responsible Resource Development Working Group session.

Prior to the Summit at the University of Alaska, an “Arctic Offshore Hydrocarbon Scenario Workshop: Key Drivers and Impacts” with facilitator Lawson Brigham, Distinguished Professor of Geography and Arctic Policy. Expanding hydrocarbon extraction to undeveloped frontier regions with huge hydrocarbon reserves has become a priority in national strategies. The workshop will explore the future of Arctic offshore hydrocarbon development and its implications. Scenarios will be explored in this workshop environment with the aim to identify the critical uncertainties and differentiate between key drivers that will influence the future from the predetermined elements that will hold relatively constant.
