IIASA produces advanced methods of population projection, with an emphasis on the interactions between population and human capital in developing and developed countries.
Research focuses mainly on the changing composition of populations and, perhaps even more importantly, on certain key properties of populations, such as age, sex, and level of education. IIASA methodology enables all of these be assessed quantitatively and modeled dynamically. Information and data on population dynamics are key inputs to almost every area of research at IIASA.
One of the latest initiatives is preparation of population projections for the new Shared Socioeconomic Pathways underpinning the Fifth Assessment Report of the IPCC.
The credibility of its population research is allowing IIASA to provide science-based, policy-relevant information at the highest levels to national governments, UN agencies, the European Commission, NGOs, and the private sector.
