Economic growth

Research at IIASA addresses the dichotomy  of supporting sustainable growth while avoiding human inequalities and environmental degradation

Many developing economies are struggling to reconcile the notion of growth in economic development with the avoidance of social inequalities and environmental degradation.

Most developing countries with rapid growth rates depend on coal-dominated energy systems that result in multiple negative environmental impacts.  They see "green growth" as a proxy for transformational economic changes toward sustainability. In reality, however, green growth or decarbonization is only one step on the path to sustainable development.

An important challenge for IIASA research is to understand the impact of economic growth and international trade on globalization and to support the development of national and international policies that enhance the benefits of globalization while avoiding its risks.
