Overview

The 2013 program starts on June 1, 2013 , and ends on August 31, 2013. In order to be considered, applicants must commit to staying for the entire program.

An essential part of the application is a proposed research plan (view a suggested structure here) which should be relevant to the research agenda of the program selected by the applicant. The plan should describe how your research objectives relate to the program you select, and should include a description of the background and skills that qualify you for the program. For scientific questions pertaining to the program you are interested in, please contact the relevant program representative.

The application period for the 2012 YSSP starts in1 October 3, 2012 , and runs through January 14, 2013 (24:00 CET). During this time you can create a new application, edit an existing application, and submit a completed application to the program. Applications submitted after the deadline cannot be accepted.

Scholarships

Most of IIASA's National Member Organizations (NMO) provide grants to enable young scientists (either their own nationals or foreign students studying in their country) to participate in the YSSP. Inquiries concerning financial aid should be directed to the appropriate NMO Secretary.

Applicants not eligible for an NMO scholarship must find alternative funds from their home institution or other sources to finance their participation. IIASA has limited funds for exceptional applicants from non-NMO countries: these are awarded as part of the selection procedure.

Submitting an application

The application process is simple and convenient. The menu on the left side allows you to jump between different pages and change information you have already entered. It is not necessary to complete the entire application at once; you can add information and make changes, then leave the site and come back later.

The following steps will guide you through the process:

  • Step 1: Create new application, receive your application ID number

This option allows you to start a new application, and it requires only your name, an Email address and a password. Your Email, along with the password, allows you to prepare and edit the application.

  • Step 2: Preparing your application

The preparation of the application requires filling in a number of forms that ask you to provide data about your studies, thesis, interests, motivation for applying to the program, and names of two references.

You have the ability to store your draft application's content, exit and then return using your Email and ID number. Once a particular page of the form is completed, do not forget to click "Update Application Form" before proceeding to the next page of the form.

All fields marked with an "*"  must be completed in order to submit your application. You will only be able to proceed to Step 3 after all the required information is completed.

  • Step 3: Submit your application

When you submit your application it will be automatically checked for completeness and you will be prompted to provide any information that is missing. When the application is verified as complete, it will be accepted and you will receive confirmation and further instructions. Once the application is submitted, it cannot be changed.

Reference letters

Applications cannot be considered until your reference letters have been received. The reference letters must be received by January 31, 2013.

Reference letters supporting your application must be uploaded by the referees, so do not send them yourselves. An Email explaining the procedure on how to upload the reference letter will be sent (upon your request) to those providing references after you enter their names on your application.

Any reference letter must be uploaded to IIASA as an Adobe PDF (.pdf) file.
