Conditions and Eligibility

Conditions of Participation

Participants are expected to be resident at IIASA for the entire 3-month period; June through August. Up to five days of leave may be approved by supervisors for participation in conferences and/or for personal reasons. Participants also agree to a timely submission of their 
                                                      research reports.

The 2013 program starts on June 1, 2013, and ends on August 31, 2013. In order to be considered, applicants must commit to staying for the entire program.

Application Period

Registration for the 2013 program is open from the October 1, 2012 until the January 14, 2013. Only complete applications received before 24.00 (CET) on January 14, 2013 will be considered. The on-line Application Form will be available on the YSSP website during the application period.

Candidates will be informed about acceptance of their applications by March 11, 2013.

Eligibility

Applicants from all countries are welcome. Although IIASA gives priority to citizens or residents of countries in which IIASA has a National Member Organization (NMO) a limited number of applicants from non-NMO countries are accepted each year and in very exceptional cases funding is provided.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the Program applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • interested candidates should have research experience corresponding to a level typical of a researcher about 2 years prior to receiving a PhD or equivalent degree. Candidates already holding a PhD degree (by January 14, 2013) are asked to consider applying to IIASA’s postdoc program;
  • a summer research proposal that clearly fits the research agenda of a selected IIASA

  • ability to work independently as well as to interact with other scientists;
  • fluency in English and the ability to communicate in a scientific environment; and
  • willingness to actively participate in a broad range of interdisciplinary scientific activities at
    IIASA.

Selection Criteria

Each year the YSSP Committee selects about 50-55 students. The following criteria are taken into consideration during the review and selection process:

  • the quality of the proposed research plan, including its relevance to (i) the research agenda of the program selected by the applicant, (ii) the research objectives of the candidate and (iii) the corresponding background and skills of the applicant;
  • IIASA's capacity to host the proposed research;
  • letters of recommendation.
